In the first half of the 13th century, a fortress was built on the site of today's castle by the monastery of St. John the Baptist in Ostrov nad Davlí. During the 15th and 16th centuries, Tochovice was held by the Zmrzlík family from Svojšín, and the Lokšan family from Lokšan. In 1623, Přibík Jeníšek from Újezd acquired the estate in nearby Březnice, which subsequently annexed Tochovice as well. The Jeníšeks from Újezd held Tochovice until 1728, and when their family's male-line died out, Count Vilém Albrecht Krakowský from Kolowrat inherited the Tochovice estate. In 1733 he ceded it to Anna Maria Michna from Újezd, who married Michna from Vacínov. The estate was burdened by the debts that Anna Maria had accumulated, and she was forced to sell it. The knight, Jan Wenceslas Schonowitz, became the new owner, and after him, his daughter Josefa, who, upon marriage became Baroness Vernier from Rougemontu. At the end of the 18th century, Tochovice passed to her daughter, Johana von Hochberg, who in 1802 sold it to Jan Prokop Hartmann from Klarštejn, an imperial army officer who held high office, including that of police director of the Royal Capital of Prague. He also co-founded the National Museum in Prague.
skutečnosti Dorota Zaháňská a ne její starší sestra Kateřina Vilemína.
In 1808, the owner of Tochovice became Countess Dorothea of Courland, née von Medem, widow of Peter Biron,
Duke of Courland, whose daughter Princess Wilhelmine, Duchess of Sagan is primarily known to the Czech public
as the inspiration for the literary character of the princess from the Babička novel written by Božena Němcová.
She knew and supported the Czech writer, then the daughter of her employee, Barbora Panklova, and according to
some unconfirmed theories she was the real mother of Božena Němcová.
The estate of Tochovice was given by Dorothea of Courland to her youngest daughter Princess Dorothea, Duchess of
Sagan, who was known by many names such as Dorothea von Biron, Dorothea de Talleyrand-Périgord, Dorothea de
Courlande, Dorothea de Dino, and finally, Duchess of Sagan. Some scholars are of the opinion that Božena
Němcová's real mother was in fact Princess Dorothea, and not her older sister, Princess Wilhelmine
In 1815, during his tenure as Supreme Burgrave of the Kingdom of Bohemia, (the third most important Czech
provincial position which presided over the Bohemian Diet), Josef Antonín Vratislav of Mitrovic bought the
castle and estate of Tochovice from Dorothea, Duchess of Sagan, for his wife Gabriela, née Desfours. In 1842,
they died without a male heir, and their property passed to their daughter, Josefina, wife of Prince Karl II of
Schwarzenberg. Thus, the castle and estate of Tochovice became the property of the Orlik branch of the
Schwarzenberg family. After his mother's death in 1881, the castle with adjacent properties was given by Prince
Karl III to his son, Dr. Friedrich of Schwarzenberg, and after his death in 1936 it was inherited by his nephew,
Ernst Schwarzenberg. In 1918, Czechoslovakia was established as a republic and aristocratic titles were banned.
In September 1939, during the period of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, Ernst Schwarzenberg signed the
National Declaration of the Czech Nobility, in which members of the Czech and Moravian nobility "always and
under all circumstances" declared themselves to be part of the Czech nation, for which he was punished by the
Nazi occupation which imposed a sequestration on his property.
obědů denně, myslivna a do roku 1976 i mateřská škola.
After the communist coup d'etat in 1948, all of Arnošt Schwarzenberg's property was confiscated and in 1949 the
castle was nationalized. He was the only member of the Schwarzenberg family who remained in Czechoslovakia
after 1948. He again faced persecution, being imprisoned, interrogated by the communist secret police and
sentenced to 10 years in prison on fabricated charges of anti-state activity.
From 1950, the Tochovice castle housed an apprentice boarding school, an agricultural school, a youth clubhouse
and a wedding hall. Between 1960 and 1990, the Tochovice State Farm was located in the castle, there were
offices, a kitchen which prepared 1,500 lunches a day, a hunting lodge and, until 1976, a kindergarten.
During this time, the castle also served as the backdrop for two movie titles, Guns for Prague and the TV series Rodáci.
As part of the restitutions in the 1990s, the vacated castle was returned to Countess Anna Bucher,
daughter of Arnošt Schwarzenberg, who began a partial reconstruction. In 2014, it was inherited by her children.
At the end of 2021, the castle was sold for the first time in more than 200 years, thus ending the era of the
Mitrowicz and the Orlik-branch of the Schwarzenberg family's tenure in Tochovice.
